A Cortland woman reported missing is believed to be in the company of an Elmira man she met online, police said.

Mary Helms, 25, was last seen at 1 p.m. Friday, picking up her check at Frank & Mary’s diner in Cortland. She did not show up to her scheduled shift later that night.

Cortland police said Helms recently posted photos of herself and Elmira resident Jon Turner on her Facebook page.

They met online recently and it is assumed that they are together, the police department said. Authorities in Elmira have continuously checked Turner’s home since Saturday.

Helms and Turner are believed to be traveling together in a black Hyundai Sonata with New York State registration HJH6127. The car passed a highway camera on Route 86 in Chautauqua County on Friday, police said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Cortland police at 607-756-2811, and reference incident number 2017-1052.
