A Monroe County teen is dead after a boating accident Thursday night in Schuyler County.
The incident took place shortly after 10 p.m. on Waneta Lake, according to the Schuyler County Sheriff’s Office.
The victim fell overboard and was pronounced dead at the scene, the sheriff’s office said. Authorities identified him as Owen Thomas of Brighton.
Brighton Central School District issued a statement Friday confirming Thomas was a 2017 graduate of Brighton High School.
He was enrolled at the University of Rochester and planned to start classes this fall.
Two other people who were on board the vessel were transported to Soldiers and Sailors Hospital in Penn Yan for treatment. Their conditions are unknown.
Waneta Lake is about 3 and a half miles long and straddles the Schuyler-Steuben County line.
The investigation is ongoing. The Schuyler County Sheriff’s Office is being assisted in its investigation by the New York State Marine Services Bureau.
The Tyrone and Wayne volunteer fire departments, Schuyler County Ambulance and Morgan Marine in Penn Yan assisted the sheriff’s office at the scene.
