Chemung County Sheriff Christopher Moss will face a challenge when he’s up for re-election Nov. 7.
Art Laurey, a former Marine who had a 26-year career with the Chemung County Sheriff’s Office, announced this week he is running as an independent. Laurey’s name appears on the election ballot under the “Art Laurey” party.
Laurey, who spent his career as a correction officer at the county jail, ran unsuccessfully in 2013, losing a Republican primary to Moss.
No other candidates are on the ballot. Moss was elected sheriff in 2005 and has been re-elected twice.
